You have just found out a great website, and have started to admire the person behind this website. You decide that you want to get in touch with them, and want to do whatever it takes to gain their attention. So, how do you establish trust with them and gain their full attention?

  1. Start by commenting on their blog posts. Write at least 5 comments on different articles. Your comments should be astute, brief, and straight to the point. Blog owners love it when someone comments properly on their blog posts. Unless it’s a very popular blog, they’re highly likely to respond to your comment.
  2. Once you realize that they have become familiar with your name, send them a message via their website contact form, in the following format

    Hello FirstName,

I very much enjoy reading your blog posts. You might already be familiar with my name, since I comment from time to time on your posts. I have noticed that (describe problem here), and my experience shows that (describe solution here).

Do let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to help!

    Best,
    YourFirstName

Here is an example of what a technology consultant might do, if he wanted to sell them his services

    Hello FirstName,

I enjoy very much reading your blog posts. You might already be familiar with my name, since I comment from time to time on your posts. I have noticed that your website doesn’t have a sitemap, and my experience as an SEO consultant shows that you need a sitemap in order to be found better on Google.
I highly recommend you install this wordpress plugin ( http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/ ) , which will help you get better indexed in search engines.

Do let me know if you have any questions, I’d be happy to help!

P.S: Although I am an SEO consultant, I’m not offering my services. I’m trying to help because I really love reading your blog.

    Best,

    YourFirstName

Notice in the above example, you’re not trying to sell them, you’re just helping out. You will have the chance to sell them, later on, once you have built trust! Although some people might not respond, at least half of them will do. Once they trust you, it will be easier to discuss your ideas with them, and they will be more likely to respond.

Do you have any other ideas to build trust with website owners? I would love to hear your suggestions.
